Close Sponsors Table at Empty Plate Luncheon for Senior Connections

We’re so proud to say that we were able to donate enough money to Senior Connections to be able to sponsor a table for their 15th Annual Empty Plate luncheon!

Contributions to the 2018 Empty Plate Campaign provided 650 seniors in need with:
  • Meals (Friendship cafes and home delivered meals)
  • Transportation for medical appointments
  • Personal Care and Homemaker Services to help caregivers
  • Critical Assistance to Seniors (help with rent, mortgage and utility payments)
  • Minor Home Repairs Socialization, education and health/wellness activities and volunteer support
  • Volunteer Engagement
  • Care Transitions Services (Hospital to Home)
  • Community Guardian Program
The luncheon was a really wonderful event, with energetic speakers from the community but our favorite part was the awards ceremony.

Three awards were presented:
Phoebe & Frank Hall Humanitarian Award – Service for Older Virginians
Recipient: Dr. Ayn Welleford

Eva Teig Hardy Award for Corporate Service
Recipient: Ms. Sabrina Squire

Mary Creathe Payne Leadership and Advocacy Award
Recipient: Genworth Financial

Listening to these acceptance speeches and hearing about all of what the recipients have done and accomplished for this community was really inspiring. We were especially moved by the words of Dr. Ayn Welleford, an associate professor at VCU who works to #disruptageism through teaching, scholarship and community activism.

She talked about using love powerfully in advocacy – and in the case of her anti ageism campaigning – that love should be directed towards loving our longevity. By being grateful and courageous, aging can be de-stigmatized and eradicated. One of our favorite quotes from Dr. Welleford: “Justice is what love looks like in public.”

We also enjoyed the keynote speech from the first lady of Virginia, Mrs. Pamela Northam who spoke about the impact of community support for older adults.

All in all, the Empty Plate Luncheon just underscored how important our mission at SkyBlueCares, to give back to the community really is to our business.

Seeing the impact first hand and understanding that we are a part of supporting so many at risk older adults has spurred us forward to grow and to be able to use that growth for good.

Senior Connections is part of the way to their fundraising goal for their Empty Plate Campaign, but they have more seniors to cover! Please consider donating to Senior Connections directly or by adding a small donation to your order!
