August 10th, 2018 is National S’mores Day! Though it’s not an actual national holiday because it hasn’t been signed in by an act of Congress, that doesn’t mean you can’t spend the day enjoying this delicious treat. Read on to find out more about the history of s’mores and National S’mores Day, fun ideas for s’mores recipes (including low-fat and sugar free options!), and what you can do to make a difference this Friday.
A little bit of history…
The s’more is a uniquely American dessert, and a staple among campers everywhere. Sources are a bit hazy on when the first s’more was actually made, but most agree that the first time s’mores were referenced in print were in camping books in the 1920s. They seemed to be a big hit among Boy and Girl Scout troops at the time—everyone always wanted “some more!”
Today, we have National S’mores Day to celebrate this gooey, delicious treat. National S’mores Day came into existence only a few years ago. There are a few organizations that sponsor National S’mores Day, like the National Confectioners’ Association and official sponsor Camp Kesem.
S’mores with a cause: Camp Kesem
Even though this banner from Camp Kesem's homepage is a year old, they still celebrate National S'mores Day every year.
Kesem is a nationwide community that supports children whose parents have cancer. A big part of what they do is Camp Kesem, which offers a completely free summer camp experience to children who have been impacted by a parent’s cancer. Camp Kesem is led by passionate college student leaders and has expanded to over 100 chapters in 40 states across the US. Visit their About Kesem webpage to learn more about the incredible work they do!
Camp Kesem is the official sponsor of National S’mores Day. They hold a #ToastASmore campaign to honor loved ones impacted by cancer. According to their website, Camp Kesem “toasts” and honors the 5 million children impacted by a parent’s cancer nationwide.
Here’s where you come in—you can support Camp Kesem in a number of ways. You can make a s’more and post on social media with the hashtag #ToastASmore or #CampKesem to raise awareness of this incredible organization and all the good work they do throughout the country. If social media isn’t your thing, you have the opportunity to donate to Camp Kesem this National S’mores Day! Donate to Camp Kesem here. Proceeds go towards expanding Camp Kesem into new communities where they can do even more good. You can select any amount you would like to donate. $250 provides s’mores for a whole camp!

Indoor S’mores (AKA S’mores Dip)
The lovely folks over at Dessert for Two have perfected the art of indoor s’mores enjoyment. No more exploding marshmallows in the microwave! This recipe toasts marshmallows together with chocolate in a cast iron skillet. After toasted to perfection, scoop up with a graham cracker and enjoy!
The Peanut Butter Lover
If you can’t get enough of peanut butter goodness, try switching out your ordinary chocolate for a Reese’s cup! This is an easy swap to the classic recipe that really packs a punch. If you just can’t get enough peanut butter flavor, try spreading some peanut butter on the inside of your graham cracker sandwich before putting the Reese’s cup and marshmallow on. Perfection!
If you want to try out that delicious s’mores flavor in another form of dessert, these brownies are for you. This is also a great option if you have younger s’mores-lovers with you—less marshmallow mess! This Betty Crocker S’mores Brownies recipe uses a chocolate brownie as a base, with marshmallow coated thickly over the brownie base and chocolate and graham crackers crumbled on top. Brownies and s’mores are both so scrumptious on their own, combining the two only makes them better. Yum!
Chocolate Peppermint S’mores
If you’re feeling extra ambitious, you can try out this Chocolate Peppermint S’mores recipe from The Whole Bite. These s’mores definitely take a fair amount of effort to make (the recipe calls for making your own marshmallows!), but they’re completely worth it. Who says you can’t have a little Christmas in August?
